How to search inside PDFs and photos of documents on your phone

Find the sentence you need in a pile of PDFs, Word files and photos of paperwork on an iPhone or Android phone, in the browser, without installing an app or uploading anything.

You're at the pharmacy counter, the car dealer or the insurance office, and the answer is in a document you have on your phone: a policy PDF from an email, a photo of a receipt, a scan of a letter. Opening files one by one and pinching through pages is slow. Here's what works, and what each way costs you.

Search inside one open PDF

Every phone can do this. On an iPhone, open the PDF in the Files app and use the search in its view; on Android, open it in Google Drive's viewer or another PDF reader and use its find.

  • ✓ Good: nothing to set up.
  • ✗ Misses: one file at a time, and only the exact words you type. A photo or a scanned PDF has no words to find, so the search comes back empty even when the answer is right there on the page.

The Files app on an iPhone and Files by Google on Android find documents quickly by name. Useful when you remember that the file was called "Policy-2026.pdf"; no help when you only remember what it said, and no help at all with photos named IMG_2041.

Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox search the text inside files you've uploaded, and some read the text in scans and images too.

  • ✓ Good: searches everything you've ever uploaded.
  • ✗ The cost: the files live on someone else's servers, which is a real question for medical letters, tax papers, contracts or anything with an account number. And it's still matching words, so "how long is the warranty" won't find "parts are covered for 36 months".

AskFolder, in your phone's browser

AskFolder is a web page, so there's nothing to install. It reads your files inside the browser on your phone and lets you ask questions about them.

  1. Open askfolder.com/app in Safari or Chrome.
  2. Tap Choose files or photos. Pick PDFs and Word files from Files or Drive, or photos from your gallery. Your phone also offers to take a photo, so you can photograph a letter on the spot.
  3. Ask in plain words: "when is the final payment due", "what's the policy number", "how much was the deductible".

What you get back is the passage itself, with the file it's in and the page, best match first.

  • It searches by meaning as well as words. "How long is the warranty" also finds "parts are covered for 36 months".
  • It reads photos and scans. Text recognition runs on the phone. Free reads the first 3 photos or scanned pages per folder; Pro reads every one.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The page's own security policy forbids it from sending your files anywhere: no account, no server, no copy.

Bonus: the dates in those documents

Paperwork on a phone is usually paperwork with a deadline: a payment due, a policy renewing, an appointment. AskFolder's Dates view lists every date your files mention with the sentence it's in ("Final payment of $3,418.60 is due October 20, 2026"), soonest first. With Pro, one tap puts them in your phone's calendar with a reminder a week before. More on that here.

Which one to use

  • One PDF, exact word: the search inside the PDF viewer.
  • You remember the file name: your phone's file search.
  • Everything is already in a cloud drive and you're fine with that: the drive's search.
  • Several files or photos, private papers, or you don't know the exact wording: AskFolder.
